Time Trial Bike Regulations - Measurement & Compliance

USA Cycling has adopted UCI's Time Trial Bike Regulations.

It is essential for all racers to understand these regulations and how to measure bikes for compliance, specifically when participating in any National and NRC events.

At this time, these regulations apply only to National and NRC events (see below), so you are NOT required to have your bike inspected and certified for the State Time Trial event on May 30.

As a FREE service to all Time Trialists in the state of Florida, the FRCA has obtained a UCI Bike Jig to measure TT bikes for compliance with these regulations.

The Bike Jig and and a FRCA Official will be available at all FPS TT events, starting with the State Time Trial on May 30, to help all racers understand the regulations and measure their bikes for compliance. Please allow 1 minute to inspection your bike, and 3 minutes to inspect for morphological exceptions.

We hope you take advantage of this valuable and free service, and we urge you to start making the necessary adjustments if needed as soon as possible. The FRCA's Board and Promoters are discussing the enforcement of these regulations at FPS events as well. Please take notice and do not let time go by without action.

The main failure to comply stems from either having your aero bars extend too far forward, or having your seat too far forward. These rules are for safety and to avoid the “superman” position of being laid out way forward on the bike.

The following documents explain these regulations and measurements:

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has announced the strict implementation of its equipment regulations in time trials as of July 1, 2009. In a press release, the world governing body of cycling noted that "wing-shaped" handlebars and aerodynamic extensions that do not comply with the regulations (Art. 1.3.023 on the bike frame, and Art. 1.3.024, on accessories such as handlebars, seat post and pedal cranks) were used more and more frequently, and has therefore decided to enforce the rules.

After writing to the teams and national federations on the subject and meeting with the AIGCP (International Association of Professional Cycling Teams), the UCI "decided that, for competitions, contentious handlebars would have to be replaced by compliant handlebars by 1 July 2009. For all other bicycle components, in particular the seat post, the deadline for compliance of equipment was set as 1 January 2010. "Once these deadlines have elapsed, UCI International Commissaires will not compromise on the application of the regulations." The UCI will publish a document on its website in June that will act as an aid to the application of the regulations.
