UPDATED March 14, 2013
WOW! Another beautiful Florida winter weekend. Moderate temperatures and lots of sun. Did we mention the wind machine kicked in big time as Saturday's road race progressed? Yes it did! And of course this led to some very aggressive racing from all of our fields. The strong afternoon breezes also lead to some suffering faces in the time trial, as people shot at the gate at speeds approaching 40mph, only to have that same tailwind hit their faces up the finishing hill, slowing speeds to almost a crawl in instances! Ride of the day at the road race had to go to Samantha Heinrich in the women's event. She came in many minutes ahead of second place, after soloing for 2.5 of the 3 laps. Can we mention she is also TopView staff on many weekends? Way to go Sam!
Sunday's criterium in downtown Winter Haven is one of the best venues of the year. With an eight corner course that figure-8's its way around a gorgeous small-town city park. This a not-miss on the calenders of true crit fans and an extremely fan-friendly environment. Aside from the attack-filled racing everyone got to enjoy, the Humane Society of Polk County had it's traveling bus parked on the inside of the course, filled with pets for adoption and volunteers helping to build awareness of their cause. By the end of the weekend, quite a few dogs and cats had gone home with racers and fans. As well, a $4000 check was written as proceeds, from this fantastic weekend of floridacycling.com series racing!
Many thanks to the Chain of Lakes Cycling Classic organizing committee and fantastic board members who will be once again working diligently towards bring us another big one in 2014!

The Chain of Lakes Cycling Classic in Winter Haven will enter its 5th year with renewed high hopes to bring premier bike racing to Polk County. The Polk County Humane Society has been the benefactor for this event since its inception and the race continues to bring awareness to this great cause. Perhaps the greatest downtown small town criterium courses in the state this venue offers so many great viewing opportunities that its hard to decide where the best place to watch actually is. Pick the grand stands that surround the turn 2/6 complex for the most action or sit in the town center green for a perfect view of the finish and backstretch.
The Saturday events each year feature a long early season road race in the orange groves that dominate this region followed by an afternoon time trial where only the best racers can temper the mornings effort and still has gas left for the short TT later. Big winds are common to the area throughout the day and often are a riders #1 competitor.
